AIDA | 1000MAD is the first experimental project for autonomous vehicles on Italian public roads, aiming to test algorithms across a wide range of scenarios and road contexts. In addition to being a technical challenge, the project also stands out for its scientific outreach value, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge about autonomous driving and its potential.

MEDITERRANEAN GRAND TOUR

1000MAD | Mediterranean Grand Tour aims to conduct extensive testing on autonomous driving in Southern Italy, along with events in Campania’s territory.

The events are divided into different activities that start with two days of workshops, addressed to schools and companies, organized at the University of Salerno, partner of the project. These events aim to foster scientific dissemination and sensitize the participants on the potential of autonomous driving.

At the end of the workshops, real tests start, consisting in a series of experimentations along the Tangenziale di Napoli, the first Italian Smart Road, provided with Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communication devices. During the test the infrastructure will communicate with the vehicle, sending it a target speed to follow. In fact, it has been studied that on highways, following the recommended speed can reduce the formation of lines and the number of car crashes, making driving easier and more fluid.

A significant moment of the event is the participation in the “1000 Miglia Experience Italy”, a spin-off of the 1000 Miglia, which will take place along the picturesque roads of Southern Italy, passing through the Costiera Amalfitana. The route, with AIDA’s team as a protagonist, will start from Sorrento and conclude in the fascinating city of Matera.

To wrap up this intense series of activities, a discussion will be held with the project partners to analyze and celebrate the results and progresses of the experimentations, achieved during the year. The event will conclude with the unreleased projection and the première of AIDA’s docufilm, that aims to inspire new generations to face and commit to current cities and mobility’s problems, telling the story of a team of young engineers , through daily challenges and autonomous driving competitions.

    1000 MIGLIA EXPERIENCE FLORIDA

After its successful participation in the 2023 edition of the legendary 1000 Miglia race, the Maserati MC20 Cielo with autonomous driving technology, developed by Politecnico di Milano, flew across the ocean to join the “1000 Miglia Experience Florida”.

This vehicle showcases the excellence of the university’s research on autonomous driving on the roads of the United States. The presence of the Maserati MC20 Cielo in this event represents not only a connection between the past and the future but also highlights the evolution of mobility, introducing Italian engineering to new international arenas.

    1000 Miglia Autonomous Drive

The goal of 1000 Miglia Autonomous Drive is to test autonomous driving technology in different Italian road scenarios, traveling the route of the historic 1000 Miglia competition, which runs from Brescia to Rome and back.

    1000 MIGLIA 2023

The AIDA team participated in the 2023 edition of the 1000 Miglia with the Maserati MC20 Cielo.

    RESULTS:

    • Over 60 km traveled in autonomous driving mode in the towns of BRESCIA, BERGAMO, MILAN, PARMA, MODENA, and FERRARA.
    • The collection of data along the entire route to assess the robustness and reliability of the system.
